Kinney Road Is Closed This Fall Because of One Six-Inch Pipe

  • November 5, 2026

A single six-inch water line runs under the westbound lane of Kinney Road, between the eastern McCain Loop intersection and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. For decades it has been the museum's only water supply. Pima County is now replacing it, and the replacement is why about two miles of the main road through Tucson Mountain Park have been closed since Oct. 1.

Starr Pass sits against the Tucson Mountains, and the Desert Museum, the King Canyon Trailhead and Saguaro National Park West are the places you send out-of-town guests. The work under the westbound lane is the reason the road is closed, it accounts for how long the closure lasts, and repaving comes only after it is done.

A Pipe That Kept Making the News

KVOA reported that officials say the aging line "has failed numerous times" in recent years. Those failures caused emergency road closures and cut off water to the Desert Museum and other facilities in Tucson Mountain Park.

The Arizona Daily Star covered one of those breaks. A contracted crew started repairs on the line along Kinney Road on a Thursday morning, Aug. 17. Water service in the area was shut off during morning hours, traffic was cut to a single lane with a flagger, and the county expected the work to take four days or less.

That is how the old system worked. Each patch took a few days and a flagger, and with one line feeding the museum, a single break could cut its water. This fall's closure runs about eight weeks, and its purpose is to stop the cycle of quick patches.

How the Fix Got Paid For

The money came together in two steps, about a year apart.

  1. August 2025. The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted to accept a grant from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the line replacement, with the county matching 25 percent of the project's cost, according to KVOA.
  2. Sept. 22, 2026. The board unanimously approved a $2,680,000 contract with B & F Contracting, Inc. for the Tucson Mountain Park Water Line Replacement Project. According to the meeting record, funding is split 75 percent from the Army Corps of Engineers Section 595 Program and 25 percent from county General Funds PAYGO, and the Project Design and Construction department administers it.
  3. Oct. 1, 2026. Kinney Road closed, eight days after the contract vote.

On a $2.68 million contract, that split puts the county's share at about $670,000, with federal money covering the rest. Pay-as-you-go general funds mean the county is paying its share from current funds, not borrowing for it.

The project replaces about two miles of six-inch line, from the eastern Kinney Road and McCain Loop intersection to the Ranger House southeast of the Desert Museum entrance. The road closure starts at that same eastern intersection and runs to the museum entrance.

What's Closed and What Isn't

Pima County's Sept. 30 closure notice closes Kinney Road from the eastern intersection of McCain Loop to the Desert Museum entrance, Oct. 1 through Nov. 24, 2026, with McCain Loop as the detour. The closed list is short and specific.

Closed during construction Open during construction
Kinney Road, McCain Loop east intersection to the Desert Museum entrance Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
Juan Santa Cruz Picnic Area King Canyon Trailhead
Brown Mountain Picnic Area Gilbert Ray Campground
Sections of the Orcutt Trail Tucson Mountain Park Archery Range
Sections of the Cougar and Ringtail trails Saguaro National Park
Sections of the Brown Mountain Spur Trail All other Tucson Mountain Park amenities

KVOA reports that McCain Loop takes drivers from the start of the closure to just west of the Desert Museum, and that the detour adds five to 10 minutes of travel time. That time is the cost of fixing the pipe on a published schedule. Under the old pattern, failures brought emergency road closures and cut water to the museum.

The Pavement Comes Last

Pima County Transportation plans to repave this section of Kinney Road under its Road Pavement Repair and Preservation Program. KVOA describes the result as "a smoother ride for visitors to some of the County's most popular attractions."

The order makes sense. Paving over a pipe that might be dug up again for the next emergency repair would waste the new pavement. Replacing the line first means the new surface goes down over a new pipe, not a failing one. The Desert Museum gets a dependable water supply out of this project, and drivers get smoother pavement in the same pass.

The county has the same Nov. 24 date in its notice and in KVOA's report, which says the work is "expected to be completed by Nov. 24." Before a trip that depends on the closed stretch, check Pima County's road updates.

This kind of story has come up on the other side of town too. Earlier this fall, rebuilding Sunrise Drive at Esperero Wash turned out to be fire recovery work. On Kinney Road, the closure is about the museum's water supply.

The Weeks Left on the Detour

The museum and the attractions around it keep their schedules while the road is closed. Here is what's coming up in the rest of the closure and just after it.

  • Nov. 14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Desert Museum's Indigenous Arts Fair brings up to 30 vendors and live demonstrations. Ty Campos performs from 1 to 3 p.m., and Twila Cassadore speaks from 2 to 3 p.m. The fair is free with museum admission.
  • Nov. 21, 6:30 to 10 p.m. Old Tucson holds a free Holiday Night Market with local vendors and food trucks.
  • Nov. 24. Old Tucson opens Yuletide 2026, with Santa and Mrs. Claus, carriage rides, carolers and new holiday shows. It's the same date the Kinney Road closure is scheduled to end.
  • Dec. 3, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The Desert Museum's calendar lists World Coati Day, with coati activities and a chance to see Zucchini.
  • Dec. 4, 8 a.m. to noon. Saguaro National Park West hosts a buffelgrass pull near the West Visitor Center at 2700 N. Kinney Road. The park runs these pulls as a recurring First Friday series.

Before the line replacement, a break could shut off water to the museum during events like these, and nobody could predict when. Once the work is done, the museum's water no longer depends on a decades-old six-inch pipe.
