In 1880 Richard Starr ran a stage coach trail through Starr Pass in the rugged Tucson Mountains giving visitors an opportunity to experience the wilds of western Tucson. More than 130 years later Starr Pass residential has developed this historic pass which is now Coyote Nine, hole number 6, where visitors from around the world can experience the magic of the Sonoran Desert.
Richard Starr was not the only one who embraced this magnificent location. The Carnegie Foundation established the Desert Laboratory in the late 1800′s to study the ecology of the Sonoran Desert. In the mid 1950′s, the University of Arizona continued their research and today the desert lab on Tumamoc Hill is the oldest continual research project in the nation. The integrity of this most important study has now been assured with the signing of the development agreement between Pima County and the owners of Starr Pass.
